Root Canal Treatment

Relief, and the tooth stays

Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, easing the pain it causes and letting you keep the natural tooth.

About the treatment

What actually happens

The tooth is numbed and isolated with rubber dam. An opening is made, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed, and the narrow canals inside each root are cleaned, shaped and disinfected. They are then filled and sealed so bacteria cannot re-enter.

Modern technique makes this a controlled, methodical procedure rather than the ordeal its reputation suggests — most patients report it feeling much like having a filling. Afterwards the tooth is restored, usually with a crown, because a treated tooth becomes more brittle over time and needs protecting.

  • Removes the source of the pain rather than masking it
  • Carried out under local anaesthetic and rubber dam
  • Preserves your natural tooth instead of extracting it
  • Finished with a restoration to rebuild biting strength

Questions & answers

Everything you need to know

Still unsure about root canal treatment? Our team is always happy to talk it through and answer anything that is on your mind.

The tooth is fully numbed, so treatment itself should not be painful — most patients say it feels similar to having a filling. Mild soreness for a day or two afterwards is common and usually settles with ordinary pain relief.
