Re-root Canal Treatment

A second chance for a treated tooth

Where a previous root canal has not healed as expected, or symptoms have returned, re-treatment reopens the tooth, removes the old filling material and treats the canals again.

About the treatment

Why a tooth might need treating again

Most root canals settle and stay settled. Occasionally one does not — a canal may have been narrow, curved or difficult to find first time; a restoration may have leaked and let bacteria back in; or new decay may have reached the root filling.

Re-treatment means carefully removing the existing root filling, re-cleaning and re-disinfecting the canal system, and sealing it again. It is more demanding than a first-time root canal, which is why it is handled by an MDS Endodontist.

  • Investigates why the first treatment did not settle
  • Old root filling material carefully removed
  • Canals re-cleaned, disinfected and re-sealed
  • Carried out by a specialist under rubber dam
