Pulpectomy
Keeping a baby tooth until it is ready to go
A pulpectomy treats the infected soft tissue inside a baby tooth, so the tooth can be kept and continue holding space until it is naturally shed.

About the treatment
Why we try to keep it
When decay or injury reaches the pulp inside a baby tooth, the choice is between treating it and removing it. Removing it early leaves a space, and neighbouring teeth drift into that space — which is often exactly how crowding of the adult teeth begins.
A pulpectomy removes the infected tissue and fills the canals with a material that resorbs naturally as the root does, so the tooth can still be shed normally when its time comes. The tooth is then usually crowned, because a treated baby tooth needs protecting to last its remaining years.
- Preserves the space the adult tooth will need
- Filling material that resorbs with the root naturally
- Carried out under local anaesthetic, unhurried
- Usually finished with a crown to protect the tooth
