About the treatment
When a filling is not enough
A filling replaces missing tooth structure; a crown replaces the outer surface of the whole tooth. Once enough of a tooth has been lost — to decay, a fracture or a root canal — a filling no longer has enough sound tooth to hold onto, and the remaining walls are at risk of splitting.
The tooth is shaped, an impression or scan is taken, and the crown is made to fit precisely over it. Adult and paediatric crowns follow the same principle; children’s crowns are designed for baby teeth that will eventually be shed naturally.
