Crown Lengthening
Exposing more of the tooth
Crown lengthening reshapes the gum, and where necessary the bone beneath it, to expose more of a tooth — either so it can be restored, or to even out a gummy smile.

About the treatment
Two quite different reasons
The restorative reason: when a tooth has broken or decayed close to the gum line, there is not enough sound structure above the gum for a crown to grip. Crown lengthening exposes more of it so the restoration has something to hold onto and a proper seal can be achieved.
The aesthetic reason: where a lot of gum shows when smiling, or the gum line runs unevenly across the front teeth, reshaping it can give more balanced proportions. Both are planned carefully — the biological width beneath the gum has to be respected in either case.
- Creates sound tooth structure for a crown to grip
- Evens an uneven or low gum line where that is the concern
- Planned around the tissue attachment, not just the visible gum
- Healing period allowed before the final restoration

Questions & answers
Everything you need to know
Still unsure about crown lengthening? Our team is always happy to talk it through and answer anything that is on your mind.
A crown needs sound tooth above the gum to grip and seal against. Without it the restoration fails, and the tissue is irritated by a margin sitting too deep.
